Can anyone tell me where or if the NEC 2002 talks about smokes. Spec. distances away from walls and forced air ducts.

Generally, the information you are looking for can be obtained by looking at the manufacturer's instructions that come with the smoke alarms.
For example, a Firex model:

At least 3' from a supply register....no more than 4" from a wall or corner...etc.
