I don't find the new hard wired ones or the old battery operated ones listed in the NEC but I get a lot of flack if I bring it up at the old Electrician's Bar.

No. Generally building codes or fire codes.......

Covered under the building code. I'm not sure where they are in the new book but they used to be in Chapter 3 of the UBC.
