What article in the NEC code tells me where to put in smoke detectors in a single family dwelling? I haven't wired a house in a long time, and am trying to re-familiarize myself. Thank you

The location of smoke detectors is a building code requirement not a NEC requirement. The best thing to do would be to contact your local building department to see the local requirements.

Review Chapter 11 of the NFPA 72 for single family home smoke alarm placement and locations. The manufacturer of the alarm will also provide good placement suggestions.
