In a residence we are wiring the smoke detectors with 14/2 NM. This is an Arc Fault protected circuit. Is it permissible to use a #16 wire single conductor separate from the NM to interconnect the devices? Also what is the voltage of the interconnect circuit for standard smoke detectors?

Re: Smoke Detectors

This is not an NEC issue exactly. Check the manufacturers instructions on interconnecting methods. SOme permit as small as #18 AWG for interconnecting.

Why bother though? Why not interconnect with 3-wire NM thus supplying the smoke alarm and the interconnect at the same time?

Re: Smoke Detectors

I believe that it is best to use a 14/3 and agree with your comments. I think this is an issue of a contractor trying to save money on a housing project.

Re: Smoke Detectors

In one home how much is actually being saved by wiring smokes in 2 wire, and adding a seperate signal wire  I have been doing residential for all to many years and have never come across this.
