Re: Smoke Detectors

Bryan...here's a scenario. Two family dwelling with shared attic and shared basement. How many SD do I have to place in Basement as well as attic?

Re: Smoke Detectors

Generaly speaking, SD are not required in attics or crawl spaces. Only one would be needed in a single basement. I would also check with the local AHJ and/or Fire Marshal to ensure there aren't any additional local code requirements. They may require two SD in the basement to be interconnected to the other SD's in each unit. If only one is required, I'm not sure where you would interconnect it to?

I think that you do need them in attics as well because of potential electrical fires in attics. This is what I did: I installed two SD in both the attic and the basement and tied them into their respective power sources ie: flat A gets a smoke and flat B gets a smoke. The reason that I did this is: if either resident moves out or turns off the power, the other resident's smoke will not be affected.

Re: Smoke Detectors

Most smoke detectors are not rated for the temperature extremes that occur in attics. Most are only listed for 0? to 40?C. Attics in this area are outside of both ends of that range over the course of a year.

Re: Smoke Detectors

I just finished a 4-unit complex that shared a common basement for clothes washing, the ahj made us put 4 in the basement, one for each unit, but none of the units were tied together, that way if one tenant burns some toast all tenants are not disturbed, but if there was a fire in the basement all four tenants would escape. none were required in the attic, but it doesnt sound like a bad idea to me.
