I will be wiring a garage / apartment, that has a wood workshop (just for the owner) on the bottom level also. What are the thoughts about if a smoke detector would be required in this area (I am thinking that the dust might make it not advisable)? Also in the garage, normally it is not required/recommended ? Thanks again.

Most of the listings discourage smoke detectors in garages and if there is going to be a wood shop, the smoke from cutting and routing will activate the detector. A heat detector would be more advisable in this application if there are concerns or insurance issues to deal with. I would be more concerned with the wall construction between the two spaces and especially if there is living space above this area.

Thats a poorly maintained shop to have tools so dull that smoke is a problem.I never had a problem with that in 50 years of playing with wood:p
