That I do not know the answer too, but it is a good time reference for the OP's question, Mid 70s CABO,IRC, ICC all began to require them in residential.

Yep, it is in the IRC. Smoke alarms are also the only retro requirement when work requiring a permit is done.:happyyes:

R 314 is the section in the IRC but does not give specifics on locations, and references you back to NFPA 72 for the specifics.
