Smoke Shields

Can someone help me determine what code I should be looking at for this issue. There is a first floor and second floor both with an open ceiling in the center to the third floor. I have smoke detectors on the first floor. My concern is if there is a fire on the first floor the smoke will go through the open ceiling and up throughout the building essentially bypassing the smoke detectors on the first floor. Then, the smoke detectors on the first floor won't go off until there is a really big problem. I've seen office buildings that have glass/plastic sheilds mounted on the inside of the open ceiling that essentially trap the smoke on the floor that it's on so that the smoke detectors will go off. Any idea what code sections i should be looking at?

You have provided no information as to what kind of building this is but you are describing an atrium which requires a smoke control system according to building & life safety codes. I believe it's 15 air exchanges per hour but find out for sure.
