A man smoking in bed was rescued by firefighters, but his bedroom went up in flames in Jersey City's College Towers Sunday, officials said.
The fire broke out in the building on College Drive and when firefighters arrived they found the man in a back bedroom and had to carry him out of the burning room, Fire Director Armando Roman said.
The man suffered leg burns and was treated at Jersey City Medical Center, Roman said. The bedroom suffered fire damage before the flames were doused at about a half hour, Roman said.
"If it wasn't for the rapid response of the firefighters, this individual could have perished in the fire," Roman said. "It's a reminder that smoking in bed is dangerous
