Smoker pulled from flames

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

A man smoking in bed was rescued by firefighters, but his bedroom went up in flames in Jersey City's College Towers Sunday, officials said.

The fire broke out in the building on College Drive and when firefighters arrived they found the man in a back bedroom and had to carry him out of the burning room, Fire Director Armando Roman said.

The man suffered leg burns and was treated at Jersey City Medical Center, Roman said. The bedroom suffered fire damage before the flames were doused at about a half hour, Roman said.

"If it wasn't for the rapid response of the firefighters, this individual could have perished in the fire," Roman said. "It's a reminder that smoking in bed is dangerous

And smashing your hand with a hammer is painful...

Lucky for the majority of us we have that little voice in our head that says "Uh uh uh! Turning the car into oncoming traffic is counter-productive..."

I have a friend who lost both his legs this past summer. Passed out with a lit cigarette, caught his pj's on fire. He was so out of it, he never knew until they brought him out of an induced coma. Tragic. You would really hope the obvious was in all of us.
