Right here.
Where would you put the smokes that are to be directly outside sleeping rooms if the area right outside the sleeping rooms is the cooking area of kitchen? (A screwed up layout, I know). I see many false alarms in the future. Any suggestions?

Re: smokes outside bedrooms

I would contact the Building Inspector and suggest a heat detector.
Smokes fall under the Building Code not NEC for resi.
Naturally there is a smoke in the bedroom.

tshea is right, check will the AHJ. The area I work we are under the IRC. The wording in the IRC says "Outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms."

That sentence leaves room for the AHJ to decide what is the "immediate vicinity".

Re: smokes outside bedrooms

We request the alarm to be placed at least 36" from the point the kitchen area starts. If this places the alarm within 20' of the cooking appliances, the alarm should have a silencing means (not test button) or be of the photoelectric type.
