Just got training on GENERAC battery systems.

They mentioned interconnected smoke alarms required in dwelling if battery installed.

Can't find in 2017 NEC Article 706 - Energy Storage Systems.

Where would I find this requirement?
Is it true?
How about if battery is on exterior wall?

I believe this is California Fire Code and only applies to systems with more than 20kWh of storage capacity in the case of lithium batteries.

I would check the adopted residential building code.
I know for commercial, the IBC 907.2.22 requires an automatic smoke detection system in areas containing stationary storage batteries and refers to the fire code for more direction.

A Fire Chief on a recent install (Massachusetts) provided us with the attached reference. I think this is from the 2015 IFC.

I also second the comment above regarding the strict requirements for systems over 20 kWhs. I suspect thats exactly why LG designed their packs to be 9.8 kWhs.

Good info.

Looks like regardless of NEC or other building codes, it happens to be in both install manuals (for 2 different batteries I plan to install).
The installation requirements of mfctr in effect becomes part of the code.
Interestingly, if BATT in garage, at least one mfctr wants a heat alarm installed there that is interconnected to smokes in house.
Probably a good idea.
