This is not an NEC issue. You might find it in NFPA 72. Some states have their own requirements.

This may not be a NEC issue;but is NEC MUTE on the issue? I did find it in NFPA 72. I was looking for the MOST RESTRICTIVE rule that would apply. THANKS ROGER for you input

This is simply not an NEC application see 90.1 Scope. However the NEC does apply to the wiring methods used.

As Tom has posted, the NEC considers a smoke detector as a utilization device that mounts to an outlet location. This outlet must be wired and installed per NEC requirements.

I'm not sure you'll find any one correct answer on this but if you go to the AFAA website they have a discussion group that you can sign onto with about a thousand participating members (of which Mike Holt is one). If you post your question to the list you'll get a sizable response.

The requirements for fire alarm systems are in your local building code. In our area most jurisdictions use the International Building Code. There is no easy answer. You have to research the code to determine what if any coverage is required.

The NFPA has rules for installing smoke detectors in structures whether or not the structure is a school or not. You have to research if a smoke detection system is required for the particular facility on which you are working. Look up the rules for smoke sensing devices in NFPA 72. Also look in Annex B of NFPA 72. I could give you some general requirements but it would probably just get you in trouble.
