We replace an existing 800A, 480Y/277V, 3-PH main electrical with new one. The client wants to use a rental generator to back-feed all existing panels (downstream of main panel) temporarily while doing demo and new installation. So, we will have a rental generator at site, power a temporary panel which sits next to generator. Then from this panel, can we use SO cables to feed all existing panels inside the building instead of conduits for easier run? Have not done this before, but want to know your thought or if there are different methods to back-feed existing panels. Thank you!

Please look at Type W cable, it’s single conductor, and will have higher ampacity than SO. Type W is commonly use for temp power with camlocks. Check on your SBJ and ground rods to see if they will remain or if you need to install at gen

NEC 2017 590.4 states SE cable...

Take a second look at 590.4. In ADDITION to art 400 cord types SE, NM, etc are allowed. See below. Types SC and Type W are both in table 400.4 as extra hard usage. Type SC is like W but without the braid and second jacket.

(B) Feeders. Overcurrent protection shall be provided in
accordance with 240.4, 240.5, 240.100, and 240.101. Conductors
shall be permitted within cable assemblies or within multiconductor
cords or cables of a type identified in Table 400.4 for
hard usage or extra-hard usage. For the purpose of this section,
the following wiring methods shall be permitted:
(1) Type NM, Type NMC, and Type SE cables shall be permitted

For commercial building, I assume SE cables is more appropriate use? How is this cable be supported / secured if we lay it on concrete floor or grass area?

I would argue the Type W cable is more appropriate as it is made for such use. SE has the benefit that its dirt cheap in Aluminum.
