SO / SJ cord

Is SO cable more durable than SJ type?

I know the voltage rating is different but is the outer jacket the same on both?

I've found that SJ isn't as flexible as S, especially when cool/cold, maybe that depends on the manufacturer. Also, remember that the "O" is a modifier for oil resistance; there are SO and SJO and many combinations adding O, OO, W, E, and T. (I kind of doubt that anyone sells straight type S now, it's all SO, SOOW, etc.)

Always used type SO because it is far superior and rated for 600 volts while SJ ( always called it junior cord ) is only rated for 300 volts ). My cheap boss made my day along with a day of easy overtime when he saved money by purchasing a 250' roll of 16/4 SJO cord rather then the SO cord I asked for. It was for temporary power for portable conveyors that had 480 volt Manuel starters on them. Cheap SJO cord is only rated for 300 volts.

Pretty certain the J stands for junior.
