Is a socket head cap screw (SHCS) acceptable as a bonding fastener on machinery?
SHCS are coated with black oxide which is an insulator.
Installing a bonding connection to remote machine parts involves using the correct conductor and terminal. If the bonding surface is painted, the paint must be removed for a good connection. But NEC 250.8 describes specific connection methods including machine screws with 2 threads minimum, which implies electrical conductivity through the fastener.
So can I use an insulated fastener to fasten an approved ground/bond conductor and terminal to a bare metal machine part or anywhere for that matter?
Thanks
