Our city fire department would like to have a shunt trip on the roof, near the panels, for residential and commercial applications. The problem as I see it is there are no contactors rated for 600 VDC. Years ago Sq D had a shunt trip for elevators in the downtown areas where the local utility distributed DC power. Any suggestions?
Some of our PV systems are now upwards of 40KVA. We do understand that the path of the electrons is not through the ground as in most AC systems but try telling that to a fireman with a 2" hose in hand.

The PV system is supposed to shut down when the AC power is disconnected. No AC in should be no DC out. So I guess I don't understand the need for a shunt trip.
