Is there any special that needs to be done when going from a solid wire to a stranded wire on a receptacle? By this I mean using the little inserts on the back of a receptacle can you put a solid wire in one hole and a stranded wire in the other ( Black to Black and white to white.)

Are you referring to stab type or pressure plate type? I don't use stabs, but if I did I would make sure it was rated for stranded, and if pressure plate I would use a ferrule on the stranded. My preference is neither, I'd pigtail and use forklug.

Nope, most receptacles are rated for stranded and solid. If you worry about it you can always pigtail and bring out one tail.

I was using pigtails for the change in wires but my Boss insisted I remove the stranded and keep it all solid not giving any reason why . Thanks for the input.

While it may be legal, I wouldn't argue with your boss. Whether it's your journeyman or the owner, they are the one's in charge of the job and you should wire it the way they tell you. However, it's also good to educated yourself about what is allowed and what isn't. But just because it's allowed, doesn't mean it's the best way to complete the job.

Goodluck

Push in connections on a wiring device are not suitable for use with stranded wire. The back wired devices where you insert the wire and tighten a screw are suitable for both solid and stranded.
