How they stay in business,
Stop by a residental remodel today and in the basement the electrician had a 10' length of 2" PVC strapped to the bottom of the floor joists above the panel. The conduit isn't attached to the panel, the ends about 3' from the wall. He claimed it's easier to do this than drill holes or install running boards for home runs. So far he has 1 10/3, 2 14/3 and 4 14/2 romex wires in the pipe.
I ask about derating? He says he only has 9 ccc because no one counts neutrals and one of the circuits of the MWBC is for smoke detectors which doesn't really count anyway.
I asked about bundling? He says that doesn't matter since both ends of the conduit is open so air can flow.
I asked about box fill as I'm looking at a 22 cube nail-on with 4 14/3's going into it? He says neatness is the key to good work, if your not neat you'll only manage to get half that many.
He takes me outside to look at the service, I asked about the saw marks on the ground rods? He blames the kids next store, they also loosened the WP SE connector on the meter socket. The overhead point of attachment is 32" from a window, he swore the code allowed anything over 24".
Asked if he had a code book in his truck? Says he didn't and won't have time to read it anyway.
The duct taped sign with magic marker lettering on the truck should have been the first clue that I'm going to have my hands full.
