I picked up a nasty case of poison ivy rash from doing an underground service last week. The base of the pole had a nice big patch under it. How convenient.

Anyway, I am using Cala-gel to soothe the itch, and I went to the beach to day and the salt water was very soothing. But I'd like to try ot get rid of it once and for all. Anyone have any good and safe remedies?

I do not get it but my brother gets it by being downwind ! I remember him scratching the poop out of it then using clorox bleach on it.
I was told its the chlorine in it that kills the poison. Could just go swimming in a freshly chlorinated pool too, I guess.

When I was a kid, I would get covered with it while stomping through the woods.

My mom used to douse me with Calamine lotion. I remember it working pretty well for a few brief seconds.

Then it was back to itching and itching some more.

Good Luck.

i get it and bad!! others around me--- nothing!! i talked to my doctor ---he gave me a prescription called methylprednisolone ---21 pills ..... as soon as i see it i take six pills the first day then five the next and so on--etc till all pills are gone!! this will clear it up and make me immune to it for about three months--cost of pills $11.00 ...... haven't tried it yet! but if it works ---thats a bargan!!!!

Over the counter hydrocortizone should do the trick. (I had to get it from the doctor when I was a kid).

A dose of benedryll (sp?) should also help.

Calamine may soothe the itch for a few minutes, but I don't think it really has any other effect.

that usually means that it's on something and you keep getting a dose of the oil. it doesn't just go away, it needs to be removed, washed out hard. bad doses need steroids. here comes Mr. Hyde. Some people get a bit edgy when taking steroids. Topical may not be enough, see the doc. my heart snivels at the thought of a bad dose.
