Embarrassing when an crusty ole inspector can't find a Code reference, but I ran across something I rarely see and always thought was a violation, but I can't find Code language to support my thinking.

Is it a violation to use (2) s-pole breakers with a handle tie for a single phase 240v circuit (no neutral involved) ?

Thought it was, can't prove it ......

Thanks, david.
I didn't read far (or close) enough. The "DC Circuits" caught my eye and I skipped that one.

old age has taught me one thing.. don't reject what I think is wrong, reject what I can show you in the book is wrong. :D

(even after all I've eaten, crow still does not tatse good)

Your sound advice has nothing to do with age. All inspectors could benefit from such wisdom. :happyyes:

I think it has more to do with the taste of crow than smarts,,,,,,, :D

Gus,

I think what you describe is allowed per 240.15(2) or (3), if you meet the requirements therein.

Don?t know which code cycle you are using but this was cleared up in the 2011 edition where it clearly states in order to do this the single pole breaker must be rated 120/240 or an internal trip has to be used.

(2) Grounded Single-Phase Alternating-Current Circuits. In grounded systems, individual single-pole circuit breakers rated 120/240 volts ac, with identified handle ties, shall be permitted as the protection for each ungrounded conductor for line-to-line connected loads for single-phase circuits.

I did find a code section that does prohibit it, but only for a specific use, namely 514.11, if used as a circuit disconnect in motor fuel dispensing facility, probably not what you were inspecting though. Ran across it while looking at requirements for a fuel additive dispensor for a diesel pump.

Don't you hate when you look at something and are absolutly sure that it's wrong, but then can't figure out why it would be?:)
