Has anone heard of a special cable just for spas? I had a spa put at my place today and the installer left a note that says you must use 8-3 spa cable to feed the tub. he said The package will be labled spa cable. This unit draws 50amps so I was just thinking a 50a gfi bkr feeding a diconnect outside that would then feed the tub. I would use a 6-3 instead of the 8-3 spa cable. Anyone heard of this spa cable

join the club. He said the big green store carried it and that its required on spas and hot tubs. I think he might be a idiot.:D
what's the big green store?

why not just get a disconnect with the gfi breaker already in it? I think that might save you a few bucks.

The big green store is menards. I was just gonna put in a gfi breaker in the panel and just hit one of the 60 ac disconnects. But you think having the gfi in the disconnect will be cheaper?

perhaps it is a cable with an egc the same size as the hot conductors. Some spas require an EGC that is not reduced

well I know that you can get a spa disconnect (meaning it has a gfi breaker inside) at lowe's or home depot for roughly 80-90 bucks.

If you are installing the GFCI circuit breaker in the panel, you will follow 680.42(C) in regards to wiring method installation.

If you install the GFCI circuit breaker in the disconnecting means enclosure outside, then you will follow 680.25 in regards to the wiring method installation.

Make sure to read the definitions of branch circuit and feeder before you locate the overcurrent device for spas/hottubs. It makes a substantial difference in the wiring method for installation and which section number in Art 680 you will reference.

If you're using a three wire feeder than a cheapo AC disconnect won't work since there will be no place to land the neutral, unless you plan on splicing it through.
