I'm wireing a hot tub for a friend of mine and it's been a while I know for a single family dwelling the emergency disconnect is not required. Do I still need to have a disconnect located within six feet or can I just run my conduit and change over to sealtite before I enter the unit

Your GFCI breaker feeding the hot tub needs to be insight of your hot tub and It also needs to be further than 5 ft away from the spas water, it did not sound like the second part was an issue.

In almost all cases, when I wire a new spa tub I have the GFCI disconnect (AKA spa panel) located at least 5' away from the edge of the tub and sometimes a few feet more. However, you only need a disconnect means at that location. You can actually have the GFCI breaker in the main circuit breaker panel if you choose to do so. IMHO, I think that wiring method is somewhat of an inconvenience but it is Code compliant.
