Hey guys,

New to spa installation and want to run this by you to see if I'm reading the code correctly....Situation: Was once a spa at customers house but wiring is undersized (8-3). GFCI breaker is located at main panel in garage. Disconnect is mounted at corner of house but needs to be replaced because it is damaged.

My intentions: I plan on using the existing 50 amp GFCI breaker located in garage. I will run 6-3 w/ground NM-B in crawl space to a new pull out type disconnect located at back of house (50' run). From the disconnect I will run 6-3 w/ground UF-B inside of 1" PVC in 18" deep trench. From disconnect to proposed spa location is roughly 30 feet. The spa will be placed on top of a wood deck being built for it. The owner doesn't know what brand or exactly where spa will sit exactly, so I'm leaving extra UF cable hanging until placed. How does this sound?

Once placed, will I need to run the UF inside of flex, or will it be code to run it directly to the control panel?

Thanks....
Tony

Spa Question

So from the panel to the disconnect under the house, what type wire/cable should I use to the disconnect? (Disconnect is attached to corner of house.)

Don't run UF in the PVC as an insulated equipment grounding conductor is required-- Run Thwn and leave a few feet extra. When the tub is set use a female adapter and flex directly from the PVC to the spa box.

NM from the panel to the disconnect is compliant in a residence

What kind of pull out disconnect are you using? A typical 240 volt pull-out A/C disconnect does not have a place to land the neutral.

Dont buy your 6/3 just yet; some spas require a 60A feed, and 6 is good for 55A. The existing 50A breaker may be no good as well. As others have mentioned, UF from the disco to the tub is no bueno either(680.21)(1)

eta: my understanding is that NC is on the 2014 NEC, which allows LFNMC in unrestricted lengths with spas, so that may be an option over rpvc. The rest stands.

680.22(A)(3) and 4 require the receptacle >6' but <20' from the spa, and it be gfci protected. 680.12 is the rule on the disco. note that 680.42 makes parts I and II of article 680 applicable to outdoor spas.
