You just wanted to make sure used my dictionary today, huh ! :)
When I was a kid, my Mom subscribed to “Reader’s Digest” and one of the features in each issue was something called “How to Increase your Word Power”. She insisted that I read every issue. Some of it stuck with me.

I remember those, my mom subscribed to them many years.
 
Doing crossword puzzles is good brain and vocabulary exercise.

Challenging ones, like in Thursday through Sunday newspapers.

I used to get my uncle's but only read "Laughter, the best medicine", "humor in uniform", and "humor in the work place". Basically anything funny in it.

First things I read too.
But a lot of the articles were short enough to keep my attention. I never really liked a long drawn out story or article
