Spa with supplied panel

I have a job where the Spa Supplier gave the owner a 125 amp Siemens panel with a single 50 A breaker.
Can I wire the sub-panel for only the 50 A for the Spa?
What happens when the next EC sees 125A panel and adds a 20a breaker?
Must I wire the 125A panel for 125 A, when I am only connecting 50A?
TIA

Re: Spa with supplied panel

As long as you fuse the conductors that feed the panel with the proper size overcurrent protection it's OK. You just can't use that panel for more than 125 amps. ;)

Re: Spa with supplied panel

Tim,

I agree with Russ. The sub-panel is rated and designed for use up to 125 amps.

Just a few side bar questions :

1) Where is the GFI protection for the spa ? Is it built into the spa ?
2) Is this panel being used as a sub-panel only or do you still have to install a disconnect ?
3) If it's being used as a disconnect is the spa outdoors and is the panel weatherproof ?

The reason I ask these questions is because the last few spas I've wired where the spa manufacturer supplied the disconnect means it was weatherproof and came with a 2-pole 30 GFI and a 2 pole 20 GFI breaker installed. The 2P-30 was for the heaters and the 2-P 20 was for the pumps

Re: Spa with supplied panel

Thanks guys, the only other sub-panel I did was T&M and the owner wanted the best.

1. The supplied 50A breaker is GFI.

2. It is a sub-panel, and the breaker has a handle, my thought is it can also be disconnect?

3. Spa is outdoor and panel is outdoor rated.

2002 code requires outlet between 5 and 10 feet. Why so close?

Re: Spa with supplied panel

Are you reading 680.43(A)?

If so this for indoor installations not outdoor installations. 680.42 covers outdoor installations and it points you to part I and II of article 680.

680.22(3) Requires a receptacle not less than 10' or more that 20' from the inside wall of the pool (hot tub).

Re: Spa with supplied panel

for the cord feeding the spa it is allowed to be up to 15' there is no requirment as to how close you may put it. But it does have to be GFCI protected. as for the 10' to 20' requirment this is only for a conveance outlet around pools, and as for a disconect there is no requirment for a disconect for a hot tub at a dewelling. 680.41 Emergency Switch for Spas and Hot Tubs. This requirement shall not apply to single-family dwellings.
( 680.42(A)(2) Cord-and-Plug Connections. Cord-and-plug connections with a cord not longer than 4.6 m (15 ft) shall be permitted where protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter.
