A while back I thought I reading in the code book that there should be a 1/4” minimum of space between the device and the wire in a box. Does anyone know where I can find this other the code book?

You could be thinking of 314.20 where a box must be within 1/4" of a non combustible finished surface.

Or, 314.24(B)(1) Boxes that enclose devices or utilization equipment that project more than 48 mm (1 7/8 in.) rearward from the mounting plane of the box shall have a depth that is not less than the depth of the equipment plus 6 mm (1/4 in.).

And 314.24(B)(4) Conductors 12 or 10 AWG. Boxes that enclose device or utilization equipment supplied by 12 or 10 AWG conductors shall have an internal depth that is not less than 30.2 mm (1 3/16 in.). Where the equipment projects rearward from the mounting plane of the box by more than 25 mm (1 in.), the box shall have a depth not less than that of the equipment plus 6 mm (1/4 in.). Where wiring enters the center portion of the
rear of a box opposite to the equipment, the minimum clearance shall be increased to 13 mm (1/2 in.).
