Article 110 addresses working space clearances in front and around electrical equipment but what about the spacing behind the equipment? Is this strictly based on vendor recommendations and heat dissipation? For example say I have a 480V switchgear - is there any general industry standard for how far it needs to be away from a wall? I’ve always used 6” a general go-by.

If there is no access required from the rear then in dry locations the equipment can go right against the wall.

Does the area in concern have access panels or openings?

No rear access is required. My only concern was possible heat dissipation but if that’s not a factor then I suppose against the wall is ok.

Not an issue. If the equipment required some amount of spacing it should be noted as part of the installation instructions.
