Spacing Requirements for receptacles

Does anyone know when the spacing requirement (for receptacles) went into the code (in respect to residential wiring) ? Like the 6 feet from an opening & 12 feet there after {no point shall be more than 6 from a receptacle}? Thanks again

That's ok, I read to fast a lot of times and then have to go back and retract my answer and I also don't know the answer to his questiion. I do know that it's been in there since the 70's when I first got into the trade.
