Any SPD with leads may work…some SPDs require OCPD ahead of the device, those are likely type 2. A type 1 may be ok but you need to see if you can tap the load side wires.

Sizing depends on what you are trying to suppress.
In Florida the amount of lightning usually warrants more than a 50kA unit. Multiple levels of protection are suggested.
In other parts of the country, like Wisconsin, lightning is not as likely so 50kA units at the main, with occasional point of use devices, are typical.
