Can a speaker be located within 10 feet of a hot tub? The question: is the speaker an outlet? The outlet is where wiring attaches to the speaker which is encased in rock wall. (There is a two foot cord from the back of the speaker that is wire nutted to the system wiring and encased in the wall.) Since the outlet is encased and 680.22 (A)(5) says “without piercing a wall,” and the speaker connection (outlet) is encased, does 680.22 (A)(5) apply?

I could be wrong, but I don't think it's an AC outlet. I don't think that the speaker output circuit on a typical home stereo system can supply enough power to electrocute someone.

I think you just said what all the rest of us have been thinking this whole time,,,, just afraid to put it out there. :)

(A)(5) in 2014 NEC:

In determining the dimensions in this section addressing receptacle spacings, the distance to be measured shall be the shortest path the supply cord of an appliance connected to the receptacle would follow without piercing a floor, wall, ceiling, doorway with hinged or sliding door, window opening, or other effective permanent barrier.
I don't see that you have a receptacle involved - I don't think (A)(5) applies at all in your situation.

some clarification

some clarification

The fine print note after 680.22(A)(5) states: “other outlets may include but are not limited to remote control, signaling, fire alarm, and communication circuits. Outlet is defined in the NEC. It would appear this is a communication outlet. I just want some clarification.

640.10 Audio Systems Near Bodies of Water.
Audio systems near bodies of water, either natural or artificial, shall be subject to the restrictions specified in 640.10(A) and (B).

640.3 Locations and Other Articles.

(I) Swimming Pools, Fountains, and Similar Locations. Audio equipment used in or near swimming pools, fountains, and similar locations shall comply with Article 680.

And swimming pools only mention speakers installed in the pool.

IMO, if the speaker is metallic on the exterior and is less than 5' or lower than 12' above the maximum water level then it must be bonded. I don't see any restrictions other than that
