Specialty Cable Supporting Requirements

Hi Guys,

We are purchasing specialty radiation resistant cable to power luminaires and a crane. It is approximately 1/4" diameter and has a bending radius of approximately 5". There is an overhead wireway that runs parallel to wall, it is 18" from the wall. We would like to "free span" the cable from the wall to the wireway, we will use CGB's where the cable enters the wireway. I am not finding any thing in the NEC on this

Any thoughts on whether or not this installation would be acceptable to an inspector?

Thanks for the help.

It depends on what the cable is listed as, EC Dans comment on how the cable is marked, determines how it can be installed.
IE if it says class 2, then follow the requirements for class 2 cables in Art 725

Thanks EC Dan & Tom, the cable will supply lighting and crane circuits in a "radiation cell". Cable is rated 600V. We are meeting with the AHJ to clarify what qualification process the vendor needs to undertake to qualify cable as NRTL. It sounds like one of the desired outcomes from this qualification will be to identify it's type or class? Ideally, what should we ask the vendor to label the cable as? We hope to utilize the cable in a manner similar to SOOW, sections of the cable will be attached to the walls, short sections of cable will be routed through raceways, in particular it will route through embedded conduits within the 3' thick walls. Thanks again for the help, I've never been involved with this type of cable.

Is the crane/equipment mobile? I'm not sure the NEC even covers something like this. If it does, article 400 cables should cover you, as it explicit lists wiring for cranes as permitted use. Take a look at table 400.4.
