i live in riverside rhode island and work in burli
I am doing a design for a new wing to a high school in Massachusetts. A new spinkler system is being installed thereby negating the need for existing smoke detectors. Due to routine testing and maintenance, it is planned to have the smoke detectors removed. It will be costly to re-wire the manual pull stations. Is there any code that makes it illegal to splice the wire at the the detectors and make wiring continuous for the pull stations. I know it is frowned upon, but I can not locate a code that does not allow splicing. Can someone give me advice on this issue. It will be appreciated. Thank you.
 
I will have to really dig for the back-up, BUT I have had an AHJ still require smoke detectors even with sprinklers. Their reasoning was that the smoke detectors save lives from smoke inhalation whereas the sprinklers save physical assets from fire. This was an experienced fire chief for whom I have great respect. Perhaps it was a requirement in that particular city.
 
The splicing is not a problem.

Getting the AHJ to go along with removing existing smokes may be more problematic even though I agree with your idea that adding the sprinkler heads should remove the requirement for most of the smoke detectors.

Somewhere in MA Gen Law chapter 148 is some rules that allow the Fire inspector to require things beyond the written rules.
