Have been told that a wire cannot be spliced in the breaker panel and that a J-box outside the panel must be used for the spliced wire/s.

Then I have heard that you can splice a wire in the breaker panel, more imput is appreciated.

Thanks John.

Re: Splicing in breakerpanel.

You can splice in a panel enclosure provided there is adequate space. I can't think of the code reference of hand but I am sure someone here will come up with it.

Try 312.8. Basic rule of thumb, yes you can make splices in a panelboard. I have a tendancy to focus on this one point. You can splice in a panel board enclosure but, as long as you do not leave to terminate to another OCPD.

No sparks can you expand on that, I do not know of any limitation on what the splice is for.

This is very common when adding one of those small multiple circuit manual generator transfer switches (Like the GenTran they sell at HD)

Bob, good to hear from you. To answer your question, not more than is eleborated by code, very frist sentence under the heading of 312.8 says enclosures for switches or overcurrent devices shall not be used as junction boxes, auxillary gutters, or raceways for conductors feeding thru or tapping off to other switches or overcurrent devices...ect...ect. Not a clear restriction however something to consider under the circumstances. I have installed the same manual transfer switches that you refer to on panels of vintage age with questionable gutter space.

nosparks,
You have to read the rest of the sentence that says, "unless adequate space for this purpose is provided".
