Does the nec oppose splicing of the main conductors between the meter socket and the main breaker?

I don't know that the NEC opposes splicing conductors at all. 300.15 does say they have to be in a box or otherwise permitted.

It is done all the time with tap conductors so I would say it is not an issue.
