Hello.

Currently am developing a design for a Split AC Unit. I am anticipating on adding the Disconnect Switch for the Outside Unit to be inside the room(where the indoor unit is located).

Basically the only thing that is in between the Outdoor Unit and the Disconnect Switch is a wall. However, to get to the Disconnect Switch you must open the door that is locked.

My Question is does this still meet the NEC, even though they are not 50 feet from each other as the NEC states.

Please see below for your reference.

According to NEC article 430.102B, a safety switch must be in sight from all motors or manufacturing equipment. The NEC defines “in sight” as visible and not more than 50 feet from the equipment it controls.

I don't have my NEC ready to hand. But I believe the answer would be no. Isn't there also something in that article an unobstructed view (i.e., a wall and door would obstruct the view)?

Yeah, it has to be within sight of the outdoor unit. Having it behind a locked door doesn't work. What's the problem with it on the wall outside near the outside unit? Are you afraid of tampering?
