Square-D 200A panels come in both 40-space/40-circuit and 30-space/40-circuit configurations. The former accepts only single breakers, while the latter accepts tandem breakers for the bottom 10 slots. Do electricians generally prefer to install the former or the latter?

40/40 for sure, if you can fit it. My house actually came with a 30/40 SQD and all the positions were filled, then I added a few circuits and a few tandem breakers and the space is getting cramped in the panel. I definitely didn't have enough space on my ground/neutral bar either. I'm not sure what the terminal count is, but it's not enough for 40 neutral wires and 40 ground wires even with most of the grounds doubled up.

Installing a 20-space panel these days is a dwelling is shooting yourself in the foot. It's heck figuring out all the AFCI circuits.
