Stacking Panelboards

Hi guys, I have a unique situation where I have very limited wall space and need more circuits. I'm wondering if I can put a sub panel directly below the main panel. I'm not finding anything in the code book that doesnt permit me to do so. Thanks

Have you already ruled out tandem breakers in the current panel?

Done it myself. You probably need to be sure you can get into at least one side or the bottom of the lower panel because you run out of knock outs if you try and bring all the circuits from the top.

Yeah, and to that end, move the circuits that come into the bottom of the main to the subpanel.

OP can also check to see if he can get a larger panel. Although they are quite pricey, 60 circuit and larger panels exist:
