Howdy all this is my first time here!

I was wondering - Our instructor states that the NEC makes mention to the requirements for the use of a 3-way with consideration to stairs. Now I do realize that 6 steps or more requires a 3-way, however, his question related to finding the specfic location in the code book- and even he couldn't do this- any Ideas?

TY in advance. :)

Re: stair question

Alpha,

The code doesn't mention 3-ways specifically, only requiring that there is a wall switch at each level to control the lighting outlet(s) that are installed there.

Look at 210.70(A)(2)(c) for the specific language

Re: stair question

howdy Bill and thanks for your reply. so is that to say that 3-ways are not required for stairs or other areas in accordence with the nec rules and regs? as it apears the code does not require this, rather, it's more a convienance (obviously one would prefer and should install 3-ways for 6-stairs or more, or for multiple entries and exits).

alpha,

It seems that separate fixtures with switches on each level would also be compliant, although probably not practical.

Re: stair question

thanks guys- i am now armed for class, my instructor swears that it list this in the nec 2002 code book (in a place that one would not normally look) but he must be mistaken. any way the point is not about right or wrong, rather, the knowledge gained from others - thank you.

The IRC & the CABO codes require that stairway illumination be controlled from each level. It makes no mention of the # of stairs, just each level. So if you position a switch that is accessible from both levels you would only need one switch. Sometimes this is the case where there only one or two stairs between levels, such as from a garage to the dwelling.
