As the engineer of record obviously we stamp the tier 1 drawings.

My question is, when the FA contractor submits their package with cut sheets and tier 2 drawings, we stamp approved. Do you guys also PE stamp their cover sheet?

I personally do not want to do this unless a fee is involved.

Please let me know your thoughts, thanks

I think you shouldn’t stamp anyone else’s design in any circumstance , I would even caution using the word approved, may open you up for some liability.

Is someone requiring you to do this ?

The trend is to avoid the word approved... apparently there are all sorts of legal things tied to this word. We're using "No Exceptions Taken" on all submittal reviews where it's in 'general conformance' with our designs.
Agree with Charged. IMO an EE stamp on any other trade's design holds no value/validity since the EE simply isn't qualified for such designs.

The term "Reviewed" is also frequently used.

But if you use one of the websites to process submittals, they all seem to be geared toward the contractors, and sometimes "Approved" or "Approved as Noted" are the only options they provide.

Thanks I appreciate the feedback but my question is mainly about PE stamping the FA contractor's Tier 2 submittal package.

I am of the mindset that unless they pay me I'm not stamping it. (Note, in my area the local fire dpt. will not approve tier 2 submittals by contractors unless the engineer of record stamps it)

I believe engineers in this country are grossly underpaid considering what we do so I say unless they pay more, no stamp. Maybe my attitude is bad, I don't know

Most FA contractors I worked with stamped their on drawings with in house engineering. Other than that it was as Steve stated.

It's funny how different areas handle things, in some areas I have worked the FA drawings had to be submitted directly to the Fire Marshall by the FA contractor, the engineer of record basically has no say in the matter.

All of my institutional and state office projects are this way; we submit them to the EE but they only stamp “reviewed” or “no exception” with a disclaimer. The state fire Marshall’s office will review and stamp them, and will perform the fire alarm inspection.

For some of my smaller commercial and restaurant work, the local fire Marshall will review the drawings and perform the inspections.

State reviews are normally 30 days but covid extended them up to 6/mo. I have a couple of recent projects that opened with provisional CO’s because we had to wait so long for state reviews and inspections. They were recently passed but what a mess it would have been if the state office had taken exception to something.
