hello

i am helping with the design of a Motor Control Center (MCC) building. The building 42' x 46' stand alone building dedicated just for the MCC.
it is 300ft from any other structure and in a rural setting. Where do I find the code for stand alone electrical buildings? Specifically the fire rating needed for the building material.

Thanks

Tom

The fire rating would be a building code I believe not an electrical code and I also don't think there is a separate code section for stand alone electrical buildings

just curious

Is this an explosion proof job with the MCC 300' away. I see lots of voltage drop issues with that as a starting point.

Thanks for the replies

Actually that should have read 100' any structure.

There is no explosion proofing involved.

There is mainly open storage for distillers grain near this MCC. So i am guessing it will be suppling power to conveyor.

From building codes and the NEC, Electrical Rooms need a 2 hour fire rating unlesss there are sprinklers.

the question then came up since this is a stand alone electrical building did it need to be fire rated.

I plan on making the recommendation that it be built with a 2 hour fire rating.

Why? That is really to protect other parts of structures or to protect other structures. I don't seen any benefit to having the MCC have a 2 hour rating, unless there are things outside of the MCC that could be a fire danger to the MCC itself.

Good point. However with this being on a site of an Ethanol production facility and not finding any codes exempting stand a lone electrical buildings, it may be wise to error on the side of caution.
