Stand-By Generator

This site has three(3) 2000kW gens. I am being told to derate their capacity to 1600kW@ because thay are labeled "Stand-By". Is this a common practice?

Depends. Usually a stand-by generator has a higher capacity rating then a primary power generator. Check the cutsheet for the generator and it should say on the first sheet if this 2000kW is for stand-by or primary power. If you're going to use a Stand-by generator as a primary generator then that seems an appropiate derating. Call manufacturer.
