For several years I have been calculating residential load using a spreadsheet. I am now developing it to have more detail and menu driven.

Has anyone else had concerns or questions about how significantly different the standard one-family dwelling calculation differs from the optional method 220.30? I have compared numerous examples and the optional is about 50-60% less than the standard method. You would think that the NEC would have these closer. I mean like 105A vs. 172A can create a really different loadcenter. I would usually go with 200A in this case but it does present a consumer getting a smaller service. I know the NEC is the minimum standard but I find it odd that there is such a difference.

I have another question about heat pumps but I think I will start another topic for it.
