Star Washers or Split Washers?

Slightly off topic, but what do you find works best with small bolts (1/4" and smaller)?

Is there a specific application when you should use a star washer instead of a regular lock washer (split-type).

I have only bought split washers, the only time I have used star washers is when they come with something. I havent had any problems with either...

Years ago, I tried KEPS nuts. This is a nut with a star washer buit on to it.

They have great gripping power. The other two advantages are reduced inventory, and they are easier to install if you already need to wriggle your hand under or behind something while putting the nut onto the screw.

You can typically buy them in small boxes of 100 at Grainger. It is the only thing I use for 6-32, 8-32, 10-32, and 1/4-20.

Try them, you will like them.

Split washers work only when you can torque the nut to the recommended value - they will not work well if under-torqued. This isn't an issue with the small sizes you mentioned, but it can be a problem on larger structural type bolts.

I've never had a problem with either type of washer on 1/4" sizes and below. When I have the choice though I use nylon locknuts. There is no possibility of damaging parts this way, and it's easier than using a flat washer under the lock washer to keep the lock washer from damaging the parts.
