Starter Requirement for 0.25HP Exhaust Fan

Hello Everyone,

I have an Exhaust Fan that will be used for continuous use, we have a manual disconnect (Toggle switch) that is attached to the unit. The unit is in hazardous location (C1 D1) location. Can the manual disconnect switch be used as starter? if yes, does the starter needs to be readily accessible or just accessible? Thanks,

IF the motor does not have internal OL protection you can use one of the manual motor starters that looks like a standard toggle but has OL heaters,
It would need to be sight from the motor unless you can use one of the exceptions to 430.102(B) (Written LOTO is a good possibility)
If the motor has internal OL and you use a general use switch per 430.109, yo can add this to satisfy the LOTO

Thanks for your response! So the manual switch doesn't have to be readily accessible (the fan is located at 8ft AFF)? In another word, most likely you will need a ladder to access the switch since it's attached to the fan. The confusing part for me if the switch is used as a starter and if it needs readily accessible.

Often the motor disconnect is present to facilitate maintenance on the motor or driven equipment and it might be advantageous for the switch to be in close proximity to the motor and accessible to personnel working on the motor but not necessarily readily accessible as long as one disconnect means is (readily accessible).. 430.107

We often try to avoid a local switch in the classified area because of the costs of the explosionproof equipment.
