Hello to all, new to the site. I am taking the R.I. test in February, it is closed book and I hear extremely difficult. I would appreciate anyone's helpful tips on study guides out of this mass of information that it seems we must memorize. Does anyone know why R.I. would have such a test(closed book) when the code book is obviously used on a daily basis for many and is a constant field reference for us all to use? Thanks in advance, Dave

I know many competent electricians that have failed this test and some mediocre ones that have passed, are you a resident of RI or MA, this seems to make a difference.

I passed mine but a couple of questions I remember on mine that where not so easy.

What is the synchronous speed of a xx pole motor running at xx frequency.

What is xx Fahrenheit converted to Celsius.

I personally am a big fan of closed book tests. While you make a good point about the availablility of the NEC as a reference, I think there are many things that a person must KNOW, not just know how to find.

Considering what Bob said this may not be true with this test, however.

Just internalize as much of it as you can and you will do fine. Take the Mike Holt practice exams. Listen to some tapes in your truck. Try to absorb a snippet of it once a day. Talk to yourself about the code whenever you can. Find out if there is a penalty for blank answers, or if it's better to fill in every answer-- even if you don't know the answer. Use the process of elimination if you're not totally sure of an answer. Narrow it down to too and make your best guess-- if there is no penalty for guessing. You can do it!

All the closed book test I have taken have been apprentice or portions of Jman exams dealing with theory.

I agree that these areas should be closed book.

I can't see how a full licenseing exam could be exclusively closed book though.

Yornoc, you can look here for some help http://www.mikeholt.com/examprep.php?id=exampreponlinejourneyman and http://www.mikeholt.com/examprep.php?id=exampreponlinemaster

I hope you don't run into the "good ol boy" syndrom

Re: State of Rhode Island Journeyman's exam

Thanks for the input, I live in Mass. but my shop is out of Rhode Island. Sounds like I just have to put the nose to the grindstone and take in as much as I can. Farenheight to Celsius, how many electricians made a point in their career to memorize this formula? I would think there are a few more practical questions than that on a journeyman's exam, this is what scares me about this test. From what people are saying, info. is just pulled out of everywhere. "Good ol'boy syndrome"? You'll have to clue me in on what that is.......anyway, thanks to everybody.

Yeah, you got it, converting Fahrenheit to Celsius or the motor speed question neither one is hard if you know the formula.

But what is the reason for these questions?

The code book lists in both F and C.

I am not building motors, ask me how to size the conductors, that IMO is more important.

Good old boy syndrome is just a way of saying favoritism, patronage etc.

Don't stress, go through and answer all the ones you can, then go back to the ones that you are having trouble with and try to work them out.

For me the motor question once I thought about it long enough and looked at the possible answers I was able to get it.

Same for the F to C question I think we all know 100C is 212F and 0C is 32F using that against the possible answers you can work it out.

You may not get these particular questions but the method remains the same, work it from any direction you can.

Good Luck :)

Well my boy, I think I have good news for you. I toke the Rhode Island exam last week. It didn't seem to be that hard. They give 2 hours for the exam. Half the questions are True/False. So you have a 50/50 shot if you don't know the answer.
They also give you a pie chart, so you don't have to remember it, just know how to use it. E-mail me if you need help on what to study. I'm an instructor, a foreman electrician licensed in 5 states.
