State or Local Exam

Not sure if this is in the right place or not. Would it be better to take a local or state Journeyman's Exam?

State would be Alabama. City would be City of Birmingham.

I don't know squat about Alabama, but if Brimingham allows you to work in their city under the state license, that's the one I'd get. No sense limiting yourself to one city.

Diito's..State is the way to go.

Not sure how the programs are structured there, but given the choice, I'd rather have an entire state avalible to work in than one city.

Even if you're thinking a local license is fine if you do maintenance in one facility within city limits, that still works against you in the future.

Ok I have been in business here in B'ham for 10 years now and all I took was the City test and then recipocated to Jefferson Co. & Shelby county. Its been all I have needed. The only difference is the local test don't have the business question part of the test. Use to be same exact test Block & Ass. ) but with out the business part. Now the state just went from the PSI to the prov test and on the 2008 NEC. I will be taking the state test in the next month or two because I have a lot of work I could get out of town and state but for 10 to 12 years I didnt have that need. I would suggest the state test but it cost more to renew every year, if you dont think you will be working out of town I would stick to the local but keep in mind eventually it will probably all go state. Matter of fact right up the 45 min. away in Pell City they require the state card so keep that in mind. If you need any info I would be happy to help.

In Rapid City, South Dakota, they require you have a local license to work within city limits.

Here in Alabama even if you have the state card you still have to pay to get a city card you just don't have to take the test again. But there is only a few cits that have local cards.
