I was curious what the licensing requirements were for the many states of the Union. I stumbled upon a few states with a passing score of 75%. California has a passing score of 72%. Why 72%?

Does anyone know why the state of West Virginia requires a passing score of 80%? Besides the obvious

Washington State is 70%. It may be changed to 75% as we reciprocate on licensing and CE with some states and they are all 75%

Thank you to all for posting.

Roger,

Thank you. I was searching there and began pondering the reason for the different requirements. It was interesting to me the different criteria.

With electrical licensing so Balkanized in this country, it's not surprising there are so many different standards.

More states are using Thomson Prometrics (Formerly Experior) to proctor their tests and bringing about more reciprocation. So, It could happen.

Massachusetts used Experior a few years ago. Now PSI exams is giving the examinations.

The State of Rhode Island has a closed book exam. Do any other States have an closed book exam?

JJ, Actually, Oklahoma was using Experior a few years ago and now PSI exams is giving the examinations.

The JW test that I took years ago was given by the OK board of Health and had 3 blocks. Code, Calculations, and Shop. The law was changed and the Contractor (Master) test I took was given by Experior and the Shop portion had been dropped. So if PSI is giving a closed book test in RI for right now, it could be changed later.

Yeah, about 50 years after they figure out how to do a nationally-recognized fishing license. Don't hold your breath. :)

No kidding. In Massachusetts JW is two parts, Code and Practical.

The State of Rhode Island gives their exam. I heard that an independent testing agency will give the tests in the future.

When they change the test 3 years ago, they dropped the shop portion because it was "too hard". I believe it was...
  1. Bend 1/2" EMT into a 4 point saddle to clear a 4" obstacle
  2. Connect a Motor control on a board with 2 start buttons with red lights, and 2 stop with green lights
  3. Connect a 3way-4way-3way on a board with a half switched receptacle
  4. Connect on a board a Transformer
  5. Something else on a board - I don't remember
I was told that written portion of OK's old test was modeled after the Florida test.

I am blown away by this. I heard stories from, well respected, mentors that talked about being asked to define a piece of material or equipment. With computers it is different now.

Did you fail if your saddle was Dogged? LOL.

IMHO
Outsourcing the exams will eventually happen everywhere. The states are not in the testing business & its cheaper for them to allow an outside company that specializes in testing & has a reputation for exams to do it, and to collect kickbacks under the table for allowing them to have the contract.
Then the states can focus on what they know & do best....Collect fees.

Justin... you hit it on the nose!

They had these old photo copies of copied copies of electrical parts and tools. Hickey, Explosion Proof EL, Erickson, Tee Condulet, etc. It was awful!

And, Yes, I had to retake just the shop portion! They gave us a 40" piece of 1/2" EMT and it had to be reamed with a ridged pipe reamer or you failed. Then they gave us this tired old 1/2" bender and told us to bend it. He laid my 4 point on it's side on a desk top and the condit "teetered" a little. I bought myself a 100' of 1/2" and cut it into thirty 40" pieces to practice on... The night before my retake!
