What creates static charge?
All objects that you will deal with consist of approximately equal numbers of positively and negatively charged particles (protons and electrons).
A static charge is created when something changes the ratio of positive and negative charges in an object. For example, if you rub two insulating objects together, you may transfer electrons from object to the other. One object will gain a negative static charge, the other will gain a positive static charge.
You can also place static charges on conductors which are insulated to prevent current flow. This is still a condition where you have a change in ratio between number of charges particles.
You can 'spray' objects with electrons. You can also induce charge on a conductor by putting it near another charged object. Lots of different ways to move charges around and create a difference in the number of protons and electrons in an object.
