Static Exciter Field Breaker Voltage and Current

See video at link above showing voltage and current for static exciter field breaker during generator start up. Can anyone explain what is happening? Current on left, voltage on the right.

During starting the generator acts as a rotary transformer, inducing huge AC voltages onto the rotor. I’ve seen 10 kV or more easy. Shorting the leads keeps the voltage down (to stall). This is what the D,c chddOnce it is up to speed control can transfer to the DC power supplies and
