Static shock!!

In a senior housing complex, the residents are using sticks to activate the elevator because the shocks are so bad. Any ideas to help disipate this charge? Being a public facility they have 0 dollars for this project.

Remove the carpet.

Humidfy the air. That will allow static charge to dissipate. Add a humidifier to the HVAC. If that can't be done, water the carpeting with a sprinkling can every morning and maybe in the afternoon too if necessary. We did this in a small office buiilding a few years ago and it was effective. Warming the air lowers the relative humidity, which allows static charges to accumulate, so it should improve when the heating season ends.

I agree with Brian.

I have the same problem at the bowling alley I bowl at, I shock people and get shocked off the equipment all the time. While I believe that it's in the air, I'm still not convinced that the equipment is grounded properly.

Well, if you get a shock, meaning that you've been discharged, and you don't move around, does a second contact produce another shock?

Anti-static spray on the carpet. You have to repeat the treatment periodically.

Oh I know it's not the equipment, but I like to tell them that. I must get hit 4 or 5 times a night, either off the scoring equipment or the ball return, and man it smarts. And even sometimes when the girls hug me, but that one I can live with
